There are many misunderstandings attached to the word art. This project will remedy two of them.
The first misunderstanding is that art is what you find on the walls of a gallery and/or cafe. The second is only a select few people can make art a practice of their own.
This project will be the beginning to a wide spread conversation about where art belongs and what art can do.
Mission Statement:
Art is a great conversation piece at a party full of strangers. Everyone has an opinion and everyone is willing to talk about it. I believe that everyone should also be a
participant at some point as well. The definition of art has changed several times, but still remains in the category of the few and the elite. My definition of art
tends to be more general and inclusive, because I believe if it is treated this way, the benefits of art can and will be carried further. Art itself will be able to reach
its fullest potential. Therefore, I propose to create a place where art and its practice are readily available to the public. Three things will occur when this
place is created. First, art will be taken out of the gallery and of the category of the elite brought into the public and made available to people who may not
normally practice art. Many people believe art is only done for decorative purposes; this project will break that belief down by having no end goal, only the practice will be the focus. Second, this place will create an area for a conversation about art. The definition will be questioned and the value of art will be discussed with people who do not have a background in art and may be able to bring forth new ideas. Finally, when people begin to make art, they will realize some of the emotional and philosophical benefits of art, such as working through emotions and thoughts that may not be fully developed.
I kept a diary when I was younger from the age of 9 until around 19. I have come to realize, having gone back and read what was written and viewed what was drawn, that they were conversations I was having with myself. I needed to work things out, and talking with other people was an option and helped, but working through my own emotions and thoughts about who I was and who I wanted to be and where I wanted to go with my life were things that only I could have the answer to; the answer had to come from somewhere inside of me. Without the opportunity to escape from my overly analytical brain and dive into somewhere inside me (many people define this as the subconscious, it is too big for me to give a name to), I do not know that I would have remained a healthy individual. Emotions and ideas are sometimes lost in words and must be developed and worked on through visual means. Everyone can benefit from art; either by seeing it or practicing it.
One final mission for this project is to simply get people to talk. I will create a community revolved around art. Art will be the excuse for people to have a
conversation. The beginnings of the conversations may have to do with art, and they may move to somewhere else. The end subject matter does not matter;
what matters is that people are communicating.
